At 17, Smith got involved in Muay Thai and excelled, becoming the amateur SA Kickboxing and Thai Boxing champion. Smith progressed into MMA and enjoyed remarkable success and used his strength and stand-up pedigree to blast through opponents.
Smith quickly created an impressive MMA record and earned notable wins over top South African MMA athletes Adam Speechly and Martin van Staden. Smith then won a contract from XFC USA to compete in the promotion, he took the opportunity and managed to defeat both his international opponents in the States.
In 2011, Smith returned to South Africa and began his quest to become the EFC Africa Middleweight champion. In June he defeated the only man to have beaten him professionally, Liam Cleland, in brutal fashion to earn himself a title shot against Garreth “Soldierboy” McLellan.
On 2 March 2012, in the biggest MMA event to grace our African continent, Jeremy Smith managed to defeat Garreth McLellan via fourth round guillotine choke to become the current EFC Africa Middleweight champion. The Pitbull is currently on an 11 fight winning streak.
